The Honking Goose

something to honk about

I don’t want to see pictures of your food

I just don’t. Clearly, some people are into that. I’m not one of them. I don’t even have an Instagram and I’m mad that so many people use it to post pics of the meals they’re about to eat. Because then it spills over to people thinking they can put those on Facebook and even gasp! WordPress, too. Please, don’t. It’s not cool.

I do, however, want to see pictures of your babies, your pets, your gardens, your houses, your spouses, and yourselves. Those fascinate me. Pictures of edible foods, like garden bounty, or ingredients plus the final product in the context of a recipe, are fine with me, too. I just have a strong aversion to seeing the meal you are about to eat. I don’t know what it is.

If you are a doctor, the psychologist kind, or just want to act like one for a day, feel free to comment on why I’m weird about this. And if you love to show people images of your meals, tell me – WHY?

I’m new to your blog, so that explains why this comment is two years late….haha!

I agree. But, my blog is private, so you won’t have to suffer the pics of mah freshly baked Christmas cookies this year…cookies of all sorts! Peanut butter, chocolate chip, sugar, snickerdoodles, and on and on! You shall be spare, dear goose! :o)))

Pictures of baked goods are just fine. My sister makes amazing decorated cookies and I love seeing her latest creations. And actually, since I’ve been working in a restaurant kitchen for the past year, I’m taking a greater interests in food and even blogs and gasp! photos of food, than I ever did before. 😉

The years change us, don’t they? 🙂 I find myself loving things in my 40’s that I detested in my 20’s, haha! I’ll think of you when I bake (cookies, that is. ;o))

The smart phone is an idiot trap. Avoid it like the plague. Unless you are of above-average intelligence, in which case it should be relatively safe. Just some extra unsolicited advice from your friend the Goose. 😀

I can understand it as example of something special (a burger filling a whole plate)
Or to illustrate a recipe. But sending me a photo of your BLT sandwich is a bit boring. I sometimes wonder if that was most exiting thing to hapen to sender that day.

Maybe, just maybe, if people’s lives are boring for a day, they could consider not tweeting and instagraming about it. Am I right? 😉

Long before there was internet, I was taking pictures of food for the sheer artistry of the plate presentation. Often at conventions, banquets, business meetings, etc. or anywhere a gourmet meal was served. I agree, seeing someone’s beef stew, pesto, or fried eggs is not very appealing. Maybe they are insecure about their cooking skills and looking for reinforcement. ???
Nice blog…you have good stuff here. ☺

It’s more like people showing off the food they are about to eat at a restaurant. If someone is sharing something they cooked, especially along with a recipe, then I get it. I read and copy recipes online and I’ve posted some myself on another blog. And I know that professional food photography is a thing. I’m not against that. That would just be silly. 😀

COuldn’t agree more, even though I have fallen into the foodie post trap when I had an Instagram account. (Still have it. Just don’t use it.) I think it’s just a fad many go through whenever they get that new iPhone, tablet, etc. It gets old FAST!

I have been only blogging since July, and I just have to say, it is amazing how personally people take things. Like this. I don’t care one way or the other about pictures of food. But I like your piece. I am commenting only because I just cannot believe how much resentment there is in the world and it even comes out in “challenge” comments on a harmless post like this. I read blogs for the writing, not for the value of any particular opinion. I can read the New York Times for that. Anyway, nice post!

Controversy is a sign of diversity and diversity is essential to the continuation of any species, so it can’t be but a good thing, my friend. 😀

You’re not alone! My husband doesn’t get the food pic posting thing either but I have to confess, I’ve posted a food pic here and there. I don’t do it often, only when I’m truly wowed by the creativity of the chef i.e. creating a Jamaican flag using food only (no food colouring) on the dessert plate of each guest as the base of the dessert. I’ll spare sharing the picture with you here – lol!

This really made me smile. I blog recipes occasionally and loathe taking a pic of the finished dish and usually go for a pic of the ingredients. I don’t know why it just feels weird!

If it is part of a recipe, then I get why it’s there, otherwise, not so much.

Well, for me, discussing meals, talking best foods is not even my style! how you prefer your recipe cooked/served is not a topic you would find me discussing… And the topic for this post caught my attention!!
when I see food stuffs, I just scroll past… Its a free world -You know! I wouldn’t complain though… But I’m glad someone spoke!

I love this finally someone who said it!!! I have to admit though I’ve followed fitness accounts that post a lot of foods but I enjoy seeing the recipes. I’m guilty of taking a pic of a fabulous meatloaf and hash tagging it #putalittlepiginit. I had too though my hubby worked hard to build it. 😉

I think a recipe for something is entirely different. Of course if you are learning to cook something you want to know what it will/should look like in the end.

I had instagram. I’ve been guilty of the dinner pic, but only stuff that I made that I was really proud of. I agree that there are people that abuse the “freedom of the internet”. Just because you have the right to post whatever you want, doesn’t mean it’s always a good idea 😉

I’m really a firm believer that people should do whatever the heck they want as long as they’re not hurting anyone. And am I hurt by people posting meal pics? No. But I reserve the right to mini-rant about it. 😀

I could be following along with the old “if the shoe fits” thing here, but it seems quite coincidental that I just posted not long ago about my lunch and included images from google of what I had (granted it wasn’t actual pictures of my meal, but I found pictures of what I had eaten nonetheless).
I’m not sure if it was my post that triggered this, but I’m a bit bothered by your standpoint…
I completely feel like you’re entitled to your opinion, but to say “Because then it spills over to people thinking they can put those on Facebook and even gasp! WordPress, too. Please, don’t. It’s not cool.” kind of pushed my buttons.
People can put whatever they want wherever they want…that’s the glory of the internet, and people don’t do it to be “cool”. It’s a matter of author’s content preference.
If you are “mad” about people posting pictures of their food, then why would you follow those blogs if the content is not what you want on your Reader?
Whether this post was prompted by my post of food or not, my opinion doesn’t change on the fact that the purpose of the internet, including blog sites such as wordpress, is for people to be able to put whatever they want out there. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to be forced to view it. Another wonder of the internet, free will over content exposure.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, relax. I’m totally not targeting anyone specifically. Did you just post a meal pic? When I click on your name it doesn’t go to your blog, so I can’t check. It’s just my free expression of my own thoughts. You do you. Sorry if I caused you offense. I really am.

That’s fine, and as I sad I am a firm believer in the fact that everybody is entitled to their own opinions! It just seemed like it was a passive aggressive-type of stab, and considering I’ve only had this blog for maybe a week my thoughts were “you gotta be kidding me X(”
You didn’t offend me personally, because I really do feel that if a person doesn’t like the content they don’t have to follow that author, I just wanted to address it if it was directed at me.
It doesn’t help that the pictures I posted from google were GIGANTIC. XD I tried to resize them but there was no hope.
