The Honking Goose

something to honk about

adults are younger than me

I’ve reached an age, 34 years young, where there is now a whole decade’s worth of grown human beings who are younger than me. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact. It is a confusing time for me. There are people born in 1996 who are technically adults now. How can that be?

It’s a lot like when you were in grade school and you saw the kids at the local high school and they were so grown up, so big, and so cool. Then when you’re in college, high school students are kids to you. Perspective shift.

When the show the Real World first started on MTV, I was in high school. I watched as the people on the show moved in together, hung out, dated each other, got jobs, went to clubs, had fights. And they seemed so grown up to me. NOW, if I watch that show, they seem like children. Barely grown babies, so innocent, so fresh, learning all this grown folk stuff as they go along humiliating themselves on camera. Just babies, man. So new to the world. Holy cow, I’m glad no one was there with a video camera and a live stream to document me when I went through that stage of my life.

Another situation that makes me feel my age is introducing my kids. They’re turning 8 and 10 this month. Do you have kids that age? Remember about seven years ago when you would introduce your babies to people? Oh they were so precious and little! (Especially if they hadn’t just spit up all over themselves and you.) “These are my kids,” I would say, blushing with pride, and likely looking down at them from a great height above.

My older son will soon be as tall as me; the top of his head is level with my shoulder. So when I introduce him and his younger brother, I’m saying, you see these people that are nearly my height? Yeah, they’re my kids. It really makes me feel my age in a whole new way. Yeah, I know what some of you are thinking… just wait until they’re grown and moving out of your house. Ouch! I don’t want to think about that yet.

Time flies when you’re a raving mum.

You’ve still got a long long way to go, and believe it or not, the best is yet to come. But I do get where you are coming from, and if you want to try something really weird, try some version of this. My older brother (62-years old) has just let his 20-year old son move into my building, and this is the first time I’ve met this nephew who it turns out is a dead ringer for my brother when my brother was 20.So suddenly, I’m 57 years old, and my big brother has magically become 20 again. My brain hurts. But not so bad that I’ll forget to tell you that I nominated you for the “One Lovely Blog Award” and you can get all the particulars about that nomination over at http://wp.me/p52sKy-2zZ . Hope to see you there.

That must be such a trip. I don’t know what I would do if that happened to me. I know, I know, I’ve got a long way to go. 😀

Wow it seems crazy when you put it into that perspective. I am 33 and also have 2 children 8 and 11. Man how time flies. I thought I was old when I had my 10 year high school reunion but I’m really dreading the 20 year now:)

I can also relate to this post very much 😉
Sometimes I find myself saying to my husband ‘kids these days…’ and then realise how “old” that sounds 🙂

Gah, so true. I remember being the “baby” at work. Then all of a sudden tables have turned and now I’m some old guy shuffling around ranting with papers in my hand. With two teenagers at home, to boot, just in case for any moment I start thinking I am youthful or cool.
I’m only 37! When did this “old” thing happen?

It’s funny, but I don’t even think of my own parents as being old any more. My perspective has really shifted.

It is a scary thought. And they’re out there RAISING KIDS. Think of what you knew at their age… and they are the TEACHERS.
Then again… so were YOUR parents.
And somehow we turned out… well… sorta okay.

Actually, if consider 18-year-olds as the (except for drinking) legal adults they are, there is a 16 year generation between you guys. Yikes! (-:

Does that mean I could almost be their grandmother technically? Yikes is right!

Umm, not that there’s anything wrong with being a grandma. I totally want to, someday.

It’s funny because one of my kids said to me, “I seen this OLD guy at the store, he was 30”. Hold on, wait, stop right there. I’m like 30?!?! Are you kidding me? Haha. To them 30 is old.

*chuckle* that’s adorable. Unless your kid is a teenager, in which case that is not cute at all. My husband’s grandmother is 93. That’s OLD. I don’t even think of my parents as old anymore…

Haha, my grandmother (the only grandparent left) is in her late 80’s and I’m amazed because she is still doing everything for herself as if she was a younger version of herself. Her memory is as sharp as a razor. I can barely remember what I did this morning. I know when I was younger I used to say that I never want to be 50 because back then 50 was ancient to us. Haha.

I’ve never met my man’s grandmother because she lives in England, but I did get to talk to her on Skype once, which is cool. Wouldn’t that be crazy to have been alive before there were cars and then when you’re old be talking to distant relatives on video chat? I do write her letters and send her pictures of her great-grandkids, too.

Yeah, that would have been a total trip. Haha. I’m amazed myself with all this crazy technology. It’s so advanced and it’s only going to be even more advanced. I can only imagine what it will be like when I’m that old. I don’t even want to think about it. Haha
