The Honking Goose

something to honk about

you could be the nth person to like the Honking Goose on facebook

I’ve read the blogging advice out there that says you should establish social media pages that connect to and promote your blog site. So I made a Facebook page for the Honking Goose pretty soon after starting this blog. On individual posts and pages it shows the ‘Like on Facebook’ widget. It sat there for a few days, lost and lonely, with zero likes. I thought to myself, “Instead of feeling bad that I don’t have any likes on the page yet, I’ll just make a joke out of it.” So I typed in a prompt, “You could be the 1st person to like the Honking Goose on Facebook.” I figured that might be incentive for someone to click the button, too, and it was. Soon I noticed the page had two likes. So then I thought, “I’ll just change it to ‘You could be the 3rd person to like the Honking Goose on Facebook'”.

This has turned into a running joke on my blog. Every time I see there has been another ‘like’ on the page, I just update the prompt to one more than that. Now instead of 😦 about how few likes there are, I lol every time I see it. And that makes me feel 😀 . I hope others are noticing it and getting a kick out of it, too.

And remember, YOU could be the nth person.

I don’t use Facebook, but I just wanted to say thanks for the follow. Really liked your about me piece on honking gooses. For me though, it’s a quack. The quacking duck doesn’t quite have the same ring now, does it?

Not quite, but I do enjoy the sound of quacking ducks as well. Thanks for taking the time to read the Honking Goose. 😀

There are tricks to get Facebook likes, Facebook wants us to pay to promote our pages. Try this trick, like your own page first, it does help. In the meantime, I will try to find the Honking Goose on Facebook. 🙂

Well, the Honking Goose is my second, secret blog right now. I haven’t told anyone I know other than my husband and kids that I’m writing it. So, I don’t want to give it my ‘like’. At least not yet. Maybe someday. Thanks for the tip, though!

Not a bad idea. I wish I had started mine sooner. 🙂

I asked my friends to like my page, but realize that most of them either subscribe or see my posts when I share them on my own blog. As a Social Media coordinator, I still feel that there may be hope, though. I often share things on my FB page that interest me, but are not appropriate in the blog. I look at it as a way for readers to get to know me better. I am just beginning to try and grow my own following, though, so the jury is still out!

I figure at some point if my blog is wildly popular, it could be a way for people not on WP to get updates. So far all my followers are on WP so it’s not that useful yet, but the Honking Goose has only been going for one month.

I’m starting to get the feeling Facebook is overrated. The reach for my blog page posts on Facebook suck. I had one or two with over 100 reach but most of them are under ten. Of course reach just means the post ended up in a newsfeed, it’s the engagement that is important. I really don’t see a lot of activity from my Facebook page. The 42 likes I have are from the friends and family I sent invites to when I started the page.

Right now I don’t really see the point of having a Facebook page for this blog. But other blogging tips that I’ve been putting into effect are really paying off, so maybe it will turn out to be useful in the future. Nothing lost if it doesn’t.

I agree. My blog is set up so when I post it automatically goes on the Facebook page, but I’ve been doing more on twitter because I at least know it is making it on timelines. If you don’t mind me asking, what is working better for you right now?

My blog has 2128 posts, many of which, at one time, were slaved to Facebook. Then, when it got unwieldy, I periodically whitewashed my Facebook wall and stopped slaving posts for a while. I noticed absolutely no difference in my readership numbers.

I no longer send posts to Facebook. Of course, my blog is now fairly established, so maybe things are different for startups. Don’t know that part.

A part of me definitely despises Facebook. I deleted my account once, and then got sucked back in. Maybe to try and promote my other blog, I don’t know, I forget why. But everybody and their mom is literally on FB, so maybe having a page for my blog there will prove useful at some point. IDK

What a brilliant idea, I knlw nothing about how to install a widget, since I’m WP challenged. I’m happy that you’re happy, now I must run so I can stalk you on FB. 😉

😀 It’s pretty easy – you can do it! I mean, add a widget to your page.
