When I started this blog in September, the second post I wrote was are you following me? a tirade against followers who are not readers. Well, it comes as no surprise to me (I know me so well) that I disagree with myself just months later. I was expressing my truth as I knew it at the time. So I don’t blame me. Live and learn.
I’ve been making a tremendous effort since September to read, follow, like, and comment on as many other blogs as humanly possible given that I also have a life. Coincidentally, I was unemployed for the first month that I was writing this blog, which gave me a big chunk of time to devote to those endeavors. I have to thank everyone who gave feedback and commented on “are you following me?” for providing me with the incentive to do all that blog reading. Your comments were the catalyst for a real shift in my perspective. And what all this reading, following, commenting, and liking has taught me is even more important:
There are thousands of totally bitchin’ blogs written by insightful, entertaining, witty bloggers.
And I would read every post on each one if I had a bottomless well of time available to do so. But that is just freaking impossible. Now I know. Because I have tried. So you all keep on rocking the awesomeness that is you. And I will keep doing my very best to read as much of that awesomeness as I very well can while also keeping my kids clothed, clean, fed, and spended time with (because spended is totally a word – bug off spell check, I know what I’m doing) and my husband spended time with too and, well, you get my point.
Wait. Do you? My point is that I am following your blog, and a lot of other blogs too, all of which are great. I make an effort to read what you write, but I can’t always read it all. So I don’t have the expectation that you will read everything I write either. If you follow me, cool. If you read often, fabulous. If you drop in every once in a long while and read one thing, cool too. Whatever. You do you. I get it. I appreciate as little or as much reading of the Honking Goose as you do. I am thankful for every page view, every like, every comment, every follow. No strings attached.
The reason I feel the need to get all this out there is because I still get comments from new readers on the “are you following me?” thread. People who say to me, I totally agree with you, thank you so much for following my blog. And I’m like, your welcome, but I don’t even totally agree with me anymore so now I feel like a shmuck for getting you to agree with me. That is part of the beauty of a blog, though. It documents our journey, our process. It shows where we have been and how far we have come.
I am HERE. NOW. Are you still following me? Well, let’s all go splash in a puddle, okay?
So, I enjoyed reading your discussion about reading other blogs. It takes lot of time. I do the best I can because I learn so much and enjoy my exchanges with others. Far from perfect but someday when I retire maybe I will do better!

Thanks for diving into those old posts, it’s nice to know they are getting a read after all this time. đŸ™‚

Hey, you’re not doing so bad. You’re getting comments and not just the standard “what you said was very interesting…” type of thing, but revealing something of themselves. I’m a bit envious of the number of comments.

Well, is it just me, or does your blog only have one post which is the default welcome post dated March of 2012?

I see you caught me in the snapshot above. I can tell it’s me by the stiff-legged walk. Not to worry, although I scamper from bush to bush I really am quite harmless. Your blog is a very interesting read. I will be taking notes. But don’t worry I won’t sell them without permission. đŸ™‚

Hah, my lack of time is why it took so long to decide to follow you – I like to read three or so posts before I follow someone and I now find myself with far less time. Or more time, but I want to spend most of it sleeping. (I’ve very recently switched from being a cubicle-confined working woman to being a stay-at-home mom).

Well, I’ve just done the opposite. But there is still the same number of hours in the day and plenty to keep ANY mom busy. đŸ˜€

Like this topic a lot! I’ve been blogging now for 6 months and have steadily increased the number of followers. Yep, I try to read each new post and comment, but find it’s impossible. So I have a system. If a person sends 5 blogs out I pick the one that was written by the person, not re-blogs just to fill space. And if I’m pressed for time, I skim and like a post. I do have my favorite blogger friends, so they get first attention. This has gotten to be a full time job! But, I’m retired and a writer, so not a problem!

I skip reblogs a lot of the time, too. I can’t read the blogs of all my followers, but I do my best to check in with all the blogs of people that comment on the Honking Goose. đŸ™‚

Don’t expect much, I was skimming by to do the daily assignments and gave some just a “lick and a promise.” I have grand plans to return to those assignments to revise and expand when I get a round “tuit.”.

There is a carpenter in the town where I used to live that gives out round wooden pieces (like the size and shape of half dollar, a little thicker) with the word “tuit” on one side and his name and phone number on the other side. Instead of a business card. đŸ™‚

The number of my followers has slowly increased over time (I’ve been blogging a little over a year). And as that happened, I became unable to read, comment or even like all of them. I still try to go through every day and do a selection, though. I favor quality over quantity. One of my rules is to always respond if someone makes a comment on my blog, but I suppose even that might become impossible if a person’s blog was extremely popular and getting hundreds of comments–not a problem for me đŸ™‚

I think I really blog mostly FOR the comments. Knowing that something I wrote and shared is interesting enough for another person to leave a response gives me the incentive to keep writing. And especially to keep working on improving the quality of my subjects and my writing. đŸ˜€

Funny, I had someone apologize for not following me back after I commented on their blog. Certainly, I am up for expanding my blog-universe, but I don’t expect people I like to read to necessarily like what I produce.
My personal peeve is when I take too long to answer comments. I feel like I am ignoring people and not being interactive if I don’t respond, which makes me feel bad. Yet, I don’t care if people avoid my comments on their blogs or not.
(you don’t have to respond to this one! đŸ™‚ )

I have tried to respond to every comment left on my blog. If it is just a couple words, my answer might only be a smilie. If it just one word, maybe I won’t answer. The comments and answering them is a lot of fun for me. đŸ˜€

Based on stats it’s clear that not every follower reads every post I write. No biggie. Some people don’t log in every day and others only read articles that cover a subject they are interested in. WordPress is a bit like Youtube. I subscribe to many channels, but don’t have the time to view everything that gets uploaded.

Hmm, yeah, somehow comparing WordPress to Youtube is more palatable to me than comparing it to Twitter. That’s a good way of thinking about it.

Still following, although not as regularly as I’d like. The more followers we gather, the more there is to browse through and sometimes, something falls between the cracks… and not everything is going to grab hold of one’s attention, right?

I can rarely read everything I receive. With work, NaNoWriMo, and my multiple writing WIPs, I can barely get in a single breath without realizing that I have forgotten something. I started my blog for one reason. I am a writer…no, let me rephrase that. I am an author. I write for a living. My blog is my way of connecting with possible fans, while having a venue where I can share a story, an article, r just my thoughts at the moment.
I have been chided a couple of times by friends in the community of authors that have gathered around me (though it be small), and have had to pull a post or two off to save myself embarrassment or from being a bit TOO real. But the main thing is I give access to me through my blog. I sometimes wonder if anyone reads my posts every now and then, but I know they do. they don’t have to hit like to read it, they just have to open the email.
I enjoy reading what other people have to say, but I don’t always get all the way through a blog post. Just depends if I have the time.

I’m just glad you didn’t name your blog “Author Somebody” – bugs me when authors do that. I don’t get it. But maybe it is a search results thing? IDK Maybe that is irrelevant.
I’m glad you made the distinction that you are more than a writer, an author too. I’m just a writer. I haven’t authored anything. I don’t know if I have it in me or if I even want to. It seems like a cool thing to want to do, just maybe not my cool thing. Always open to changing my mind about that someday though.

And remember if we can only choose two blogs to read it will have to be each others. And another I guess since we wouldnt use our second on our blog. So yeah someone elses too.

I know exactly what you mean about not being able to read everything every blogger I follow posts, and I agree with you totally that that is no reason at all not to continue following all of those great bloggers. If I can only comment intermittently, I figure the odds are, they most likely can only answer so many comments anyway, since a lot of the Blogs I follow have a LOT of followers. And even though I am still at a place where I can answer pretty much every comment I get (my Blog is less than 3 months old) I am hoping if it keeps growing that I too will reach a point where I will have to forego the pleasure of answering every single comment, since that will be the sure measure that I have been somewhat successful in this endeavor which I have undertaken. Anyway, I didn’t mean to talk your ear off, sorry about that, my bad. See you later. (I am so embarrassed : 0)

I wonder how many readers also read the comments? I frequently read comments on really good posts because sometimes that is half the fun listening to people reacting to the same good thing you have all just read. I would feel guilty if I didn’t respond to the comments on my blog, but I guess it could happen where it would just get to be too much. That would probably be a pretty good problem to have, as far as problems go.
