something to honk about

blog tutorial, posting links in comments

You didn’t ask for it, but I’m giving it to you anyway. That’s why I call it unsolicited advice.

How to properly post a web link in the comments section of a WordPress blog

Use html to turn a messy web address into a nice, neat link. You don’t even need to remember how to write out the html code yourself.

1. Go to your WordPress dashboard and open a New Post. (Use a new tab on your browser to do this, leaving open the site you are commenting on.)

2. If you are in Visual editing mode, switch to Text editing.

3. Type in the word or words that describe your link.

4. Highlight the text and click the “link” button. Copy and Paste the website address into the pop up that appears. (Use another new tab on your browser to grab the address.)

5. Now highlight all the text, including the html code you have just added. Copy and Paste that into your comment.

Done

I invite you to practice this method by posting a web link in the comments section of this post. Properly linked text which leads to your blog or social media site will stay in the comments. Errors and mistakes I will delete. (Links which lead to a site you are not affiliated with will also be deleted.)

  7. It works in the browser version. But I rarely use that since I got a smart phone, and it’s not obvious how to do this with the app

      I don’t have a smart phone.

You could type out the code though, it is pretty simple. But I keep trying to write it here and it shows up as something else, because it is code.

      • I guess I could generate the code in the browser version, copy-paste it to a text file, and then do the same in my smart phone app, but that sounds like a lot of work…

It is a really small piece of code. You could just memorize it. It’s like learning a new word. I don’t do coding myself, but I do have some simple html memorized because it is just easier to get by that way.

        Thanks! I learned something new!
Mine had an extra step to figure out though when that box did pop up. I didn’t do the extra step the first time, so it didn’t come out right. I didn’t finish filling out the info in the box! Going to reblog your post so i can keep that info handy! I always wondered how that was done……

I just had the devil of a time learning to post a photo in my comment on my own blog— finally did it but it wasn’t as easy as I woulda thought. Posting a link— maybe another time. Giving Josh more bad ideas isn’t my first choice in any case.

Certainly no one has to put links in comments. But if they’re going to do it anyway, I wouldn’t mind so much if they’d stop making a complete mess of it. 🙂

There we go, thank-you very much for the lesson in “Comment Courtesy”. It took me a couple tries, but I think I’ve got it now, and sometime in the future, I may just have to surprise you with a wonderful little example of my new-found skill where pictures are concerned. Just kidding. Thanks again.

The more I look at this, the more I see it didn’t work in the fashion you were after, right? It was the address you were trying to avoid getting in the first place, wasn’t it. O.K. I’ll give this another try, following your directions a little closer.

Try just using the text “Today’s Muse 4” and make it a link. Make it a new comment (not a reply) because I will delete this one.

      Your welcome, and well done.

Sharing photos in comments is basically the same process. You need a web link to where the image is hosted. But if the image is a large size, it will overrun the confines of the comments column, which looks bad. I haven’t figured out yet if there is a way to share an image hosted on another site, but have it show up smaller. I want to, though.

I knew already but it is an excellent idea to tell others about it! There’s just one minor detail, when I’m on my iPad (as I am now), if I highlight text it only gives the options for bold/italics/copy/replace/paste. No link option. But I don’t like to leave long rambling links so would wait until I reached the safe shores of my computer before adding one, *smiles and honks*
