The Honking Goose

something to honk about

I talk to myself

Out loud (but quietly, of course). All the time. I talk to myself when I’m cooking in the kitchen or doing the laundry. I talk to myself when I’m at work, or driving in the car, or even shopping in a store.

I should probably not talk to myself when I’m alone in public, but I do it so much that I don’t even notice I’m doing it, so it’s kind of difficult to stop.

Once when I was six years old, I was out with my family. We were going for a walk on a nice trail in a park with our dog. I was telling myself a make-believe story, quietly of course. I was perfectly happy, engaged in my imaginary world, as we walked along. And my mom told me to stop talking out loud to myself, “People will think you are retarded,” she said.

Ouch, that really stung. I felt chastised. And I remember distinctly feeling like it was an unreasonable and completely unnecessary request. Who cares? I thought. I was quite the rebellious child, even at six years old. I did stop talking to myself around my mother, though.

smiley face clip art holding finger to mouth indicating to be quiet with a red x crossing it out

But clearly, I didn’t stop altogether.

I believe it helps my thought process. And it helps me remember to do things when I tell myself out loud. Like if I’m trying to remember to get a list of things from the grocery store without writing them down, I’ll repeat them to myself a couple of times. Then, I’ll be walking down the aisles at the store muttering to myself again to recall them all.

Obviously, I don’t care what people think. If they even notice. Most people are minding their own business too much to notice, I’m sure. And I’m pretty certain no one has ever made the mistake of assuming that I’m retarded.

black and white line drawing of a girl talking

I talk to myself when I’m driving, especially if I’m trying to get somewhere and I don’t exactly know the way. Or I’ll talk to myself about the other drivers. Like, “oh, hello! I didn’t see that guy coming.” When my kids are in car, I’m sure they assume I’m talking to them. But I’m not. I say the same things whether they are there or not and it doesn’t matter if anyone is listening.

I talk to myself at work. I probably shouldn’t. But really, it’s a big store and I’m very quiet. I don’t think anyone has noticed. I’ll say things like, “this needs to go over here, oh – that’s in the wrong spot, I’ll go put that away.”

I’m not an amazing conversationalist with myself. It’s all very boring, day-to-day stuff. I could keep it all in my head, but I don’t. I enjoy talking to myself. Maybe it’s because I’m such an introvert. I don’t know.

So, yeah, I talk to myself. Now you know.

Do you talk to yourself, too?

I say stuff all the time when I am alone. When I’m at the store, I’ll usually voice something sarcastic just loud enough for the person next to me to hear. Usually gets a smile but oftentimes a chuckle. Sometimes it is the beginning of a delightful conversation. My GF is accustomed to it and thinks I am hilarious when I do this. So, she is always wanting to go shopping with me.

Besides, it helps me enough that sometimes I write the comments down only to expound upon them later.

As well, I verbalize conversations when writing stories. Helps to create a more natural flow to what I put down on paper, or the screen. Sometimes I will repeat a word or a phrase I am trying to get down on the screen in just the right way.

So, no, you seem normal to me. Besides, everyone else’s opinions be damned! Including my own. Heh.

Absolutely, I talk to myself. I don’t even care if people hear me, which is one of the bonuses of getting older. I talk to my dog out loud, too, and don’t care who hears me. I agree with Wanda, though, that it’s better to be singing. I’m getting into the habit of making up songs, and now and then I come up with a fragment I like and scribble it down.

I most absolutely do talk to myself! Repeating things out loud is a proven way to help remember things better (like items on a grocery list). Even when I study, I have to repeat the material to myself or to the wall out loud, like I’m teaching someone, again to help cement the material in my head. I think repeating things or directing oneself out loud during work is considered to be within normal limits. But there are times I find myself having full conversations with myself and I have to admit I’m afraid someone will hear/see me do that one day and have me committed to the psych ward! Lol!

I talk to other drivers (my kids are used to it but feel better when another mom does this, too).

To myself? A bit. More often, I imagine myself in conversations with other people, which is odd. What @Melanie said about not scolding oneself is good advice. (My mom does that at times, and it is hard to hear.)

Like you, people who overhear me think maybe I’m a bit weird that way, but– after nearly 60 years I doubt I’m likely to change, and so long as the self-conversation is just that it’s hard to see that there’s a problem.

Having a loud argument with yourself because you didn’t invite you to the dance— now, that might be a problem.

It gets awkward when everyone’s sitting around silently and u just randomly burst into a fit of chuckling…I’ve been told to not do that because it makes people uncomfortable, but I don’t particularly mind it myself so I don’t think I’m going to stop any time soon. How else am I supposed to have an intelligent, humorous conversation?

I talk to myself out loud all the time. I know it’s supposably the first sign of madness but I find that it helps me. It helps me to concentrate, to focus, to get all my feelings out. I find that we’re our own best listeners because we’re not going to chastise ourselves or be confused as we instinctively know what we’re trying to say. Hopefully that makes sense.

I think it is pretty normal to do this, and, honestly, it really does aid in memory skills. I’ve also been told that it is extremely important to never chastise yourself out loud, because humans believe the veracity of things they hear being spoken in their own voice far more than they do when hearing those same things in the voice of another…that little gem came from an MSW Clinician friend of mine who has heard me say “I’m so stupid, I can’t believe I did that…” Or words to such effect, quite often. She told me i needed to break the habit because it would undermine my success. I’ve tried very hard to stop, and I think there is something to her theory!

I agree with that. Sometimes when I’m tackling something especially difficult, I give myself verbal encouragement. When I’m backpacking for instance, and I just want to stop but I need to keep on going, I’ll tell myself, “I can do it. I’m feeling really strong.” and it really, really helps. πŸ˜€

Everything’s good now and occasionally I’ll start one when I’m driving. When it happens I just turn the radio on and start singing.. it works!
