something to honk about

a lame and boring somewhat nerdy post about my hair

This is as long as my hair will grow.

myhair

This is a selfie that I took over the summer, actually. My hair is approximately one inch longer now. I’ve been trying to grow it out for three years, I’d say. I do get split ends and I do trim it a little here and there. Down to my nipples seems to be the maximum length my hair can achieve.

So today, I googled it. I asked “why won’t my hair grow any longer?” And I learned something pretty profound. I could have learned it three years ago when I started growing out my hair, but no… all those years of expectation and disappointment and I’m just learning this today.

Hair has a growth cycle of 24-48 months and this is based on a persons genetics. Individual hairs have three phases: growing, resting, and shedding. Healthy hair grows naturally at an average rate of 1/2 an inch per month.

One cannot change the length of their hairs’ growth cycle, because that is genetic. But healthier hair can grow faster, so that is one thing we can try to change. And stronger hair will break less and require less trimming, allowing it to get longer, so that is the second thing that we can try to change.

Working on those two factors could possibly help me grow my hair somewhat longer. But the reality is, I will probably never have hair down to my bottom or even halfway down my back. I’m actually shocked by this, you’d think information like this would be more commonly known. (Or am I the only one who didn’t know? That would be awkward.) I think I’m going to need extra ice cream tonight to nurse my sore feelings. Ouch.

I’m a firm believer in multivitamins and that your hair, skin, and nails tell you just how healthy you are on the inside (cause there are some awful sick skinny people around if you know what I mean!) My family (a bunch of girls of course,) always bemoaned my great nails, long hair. slim figure and all around good health. I keep telling them to take their vitamins…

Warning the following comment will contain TMI about pee, read at your own risk.

Here’s something personal: I get aggregates in my urine (a precursor to kidney stones) any time I take vitamins. I tried several times, mostly when I was pregnant, and the same thing happens each time. It is a result of my body having an over-abundance of those vitamins to process. I take it as a good sign that I get plenty of nutrition from my diet and I don’t have to bother taking extra vitamins. (I did take just a folic acid supplement when pregnant though, b/c that is so important for the development of the baby.)

I would venture to say that the ones you were taking were produced in a lab (as opposed to made with whole foods.) Have you ever gotten blood work done to ID deficiencies? If you have no other health problems, you could be right. It’s just rare these days (considering food manufacturing and farming methods,) for people to get everything they need from food, but probably not unheard of. Do you eat fish?

They were the best ones I could buy at the health food store. Getting blood work done at some point is a good idea though.

Huh, never really thought about genetics affecting the growth cycle. Haircuts are annual things for me, so over a year it’ll grow out from just under my ear to over my shoulders, but it’s always the hair on the top that grows faster which I’ve never managed to work out. I haven’t worn it longer since I was about 12, except for one stint in 2010 when I was in a show and I wasn’t allowed to cut my hair until it was over – that was hell as it was nearing the middle of my back. I have fine hair but a LOT of it, so while it’s very healthy etc, it’s a heavy bugger to carry around.

I love the timing of this post, as I was thinking about letting my hair grow for a bit longer than I’m used to! Learnt something new, too 🙂

I have fine hair and a lot of it, too. I WISH it would grow out as long as the middle of my back. Just once I’d like to know what that looks/feels like.

I totally ignore my hair and it ignores me. We are not speaking actually.

My hair levels out for what seems like months and month once it reaches right around my bra line on my back. Then out of nowhere it shoots down my back and gets REALLY long. I got a SUPER short pixie cut July 7, 2013 and just over 3 years later it’s about a 1/2 inch above my bra line – maybe a tad shorter than your own hair. Considering at one point my entire head of hair was about 1 inch long, I think this is a tremendous growth (12-14 inches in 3 years). During this time, I also had a baby so maybe the “growth” period was stimulated.

I bet baby having hormones have a lot to do with it. Our bodies go through crazy changes during those times.

Another fact is that 80 % of the hair products they flog is about as much worth as plain soap.

A neighbour of ours used to grow her hair and sell them. She used only uncoloured unscented baby shampoo and a Grapeseed-Oil conditioner every three months. The length improved so much she could sell a “crop” every 10 months

I use “natural” shampoo on my hair. It is tempting to find out if there would be any difference with those mainstream additive-rich ones. But I hate to buy crap like that.

I had no idea but my mum would love to see this post because she’s always disturbed by how her hair seems to level out a certain length.

Lol! Fun post. I have hair like yours and I pin it up a lot. I like long hair, but too long and it gets caught in everything, car doors, drawers, cupboards. it also gets heavy and can give you headaches.
