something to honk about
This gorgeous bird was in my yard eating (bugs? worms?) from a dead tree stump. It was fairly large, too. About 12 inches from beak to tip of tail.
Thanks to a smart friend, it has been identified as a Northern Red Shafted Flicker, a type of woodpecker.
It was a really fun bird day. The red-breasted robins were going crazy over the red berries on my neighbors tree. There was an enormous flock of them. Also, these pretty little yellow and black birds eating seeds from some overgrown weeds in the yard. And the flicker.
